I have just put the kettle on and was about to curl up by the fire. Every breath must be treasured for it just might be my last, but I find joy in the smallest of things and the largest of dreams. So as I dream of great change fueled by the wind and the sun, I will today grab my rake to give these fallin’ leaves a good home in my favorite place at the edge of my yard. It’s my compost, I plan to give all of my heart. For it will give back when I’m no longer here. Give back to the plants and the earth and the deer.

I love the winter days that allow me to focus inward to the very root of myself. Not so different from the plants I love, I need this time of contemplation. As of today, I have no idea what next spring will bring. I do not know what I will be doing, what land I may be working, what seeds I may be sowing. I accept this uncertainty with thankfulness and expectation. All I need right now is to focus on my roots pushing deep into the earth. This is my foundation, which will sustain me through the days and years ahead.

cut, bundle and hang
once it’s dry remove the leaves from the stem and crunch up the leaves and place them in a glass.
Yummy…freshly dried herbs for use through the winter:)

redclover.jpgRed Clover, Trifolium pratense, definately deserves to be the 1st herb of my journal. My earliest “herb memory” is Red Clover blossoms. As a young girl, I was told that I could “suck” the nectar out of the petals. I thought this was very cool. Little did I know, Red Clover had just become my herbal ally.

Turns out Red Clover is one of the best mucous clearers. It’s a great choice for all types of cancer throughout the body. Maybe you’ve heard of Red Clover Compound or Hoxie Formula, both have a long history of use as alterative, cancer formulas. For acne, make a strong red clover tea and use as a skin wash. It calms the nerves during periods of exhaustion. It’s a loved tonic due to its high mineral & vitamin content.

It contains a trace element Molybdenum, which helps to facilitate the release of nitrogen from the body. It also helps improves lactation in nursing mothers. This makes sense to me…increases nutrition, clears out waste, and calms the body in time of exhaustion….better lactation:) Why does it work so well for skin problems?
